Never a Time Waster: Why You Should Always Ask Us to Survey and Quote

A friendly steel fabricator discussing a project with a customer in a workshop

If you need steelwork, sheet metal work or a custom fabrication project, you may hesitate before picking up the phone.

Perhaps you are still comparing options. Maybe the project is only at the planning stage. You may not know whether the idea is practical, what it should cost or when the work will actually go ahead.

You might even worry that asking a steel fabricator to visit, measure up and prepare a quote will waste their time if you decide not to proceed.

At RW Steel Fabrications LTD, that is not how we see it.

Our friendly team will never think you are a time waster because you ask us to survey a job and then decide not to go ahead. That is a normal part of planning work. We would much rather talk through your requirements, give you an honest view and provide a realistic price than have you struggle on with guesswork.

Whether you are a homeowner, architect, builder, construction company, shop fitter, bar fitter, tradesperson or another fabrication business, you are welcome to get in touch.

A survey is a conversation, not a commitment

When we survey a job, the purpose is to understand what you need and work out the best way forward.

That may involve:

  • Measuring the area or existing structure
  • Looking at access to the site
  • Checking how the finished steelwork will be installed
  • Discussing materials, finishes and practical options
  • Reviewing drawings, photographs or sketches
  • Identifying possible problems before fabrication begins
  • Advising honestly on what is possible
  • Preparing a quotation based on the actual requirements

It is not a high-pressure sales appointment. You are not expected to make a decision while we are there, and you are not committing to use us simply because we have visited.

Sometimes a short conversation is enough. Other projects need a proper site visit and detailed measurements. Either way, the aim is to give you useful information so that you can make the right decision for your project.

Why surveying the job helps everyone

A survey helps us understand the details that may not be obvious from a phone call or email.

For example, a drawing may show the overall dimensions but not the restricted access route. A photograph may show a wall but not reveal what is behind it. A proposed steel frame may look straightforward until we consider how it will be delivered, positioned and fixed in place.

Seeing the job properly gives us a better chance of getting the details right first time.

It can help us understand:

  • The exact dimensions
  • The condition of existing surfaces or structures
  • The available working space
  • How materials can be brought onto site
  • Whether lifting equipment or additional support may be needed
  • How the fabricated items will connect to surrounding work
  • Whether another material or design approach would be more suitable

This is especially important for structural steel fabrication, bespoke frames, handrails, gates, bar fit-outs and larger welded assemblies. It is also useful for smaller jobs such as brackets, flashings, trims, enclosures and one-off sheet metal components.

A survey does not make every job more complicated. It simply gives both sides a clearer starting point.

We would rather give you a straight price than guess

A rough price can be useful at the very early stage of a project, but guessing can create problems later.

If a quotation is based on incomplete information, the final cost may change when we discover additional measurements, difficult access, more complicated fabrication or extra finishing requirements. That can be frustrating for everyone.

Our preference is to understand the job properly and provide a clear, readable quotation based on what is actually required.

That does not mean every detail has to be final before you contact us. We are happy to start with a rough brief, a sketch, some dimensions, a photograph or a set of drawings. We can then talk through what is missing and decide whether a site survey would be helpful.

Our structural steel fabrication service covers fabricated frames, beams, columns, supports, brackets, cleats and welded assemblies. For more detailed or smaller components, our sheet metal work service includes flashings, trims, sill covers, brackets, enclosures and one-off items.

No pressure if the job does not go ahead

There are many completely normal reasons why a project may not proceed after a survey or quotation.

You may decide that:

  • The price is higher than expected
  • The wider project needs to be put on hold
  • The budget has been used elsewhere
  • You need to wait for planning permission or another contractor
  • You have chosen a different design or construction method
  • You have found another supplier who is closer to the site
  • The work is not needed just yet
  • Circumstances have changed

None of these situations offend us.

We understand that you may need to compare quotations, review your budget or wait until other parts of the project are confirmed. That is your decision to make, and we will respect it.

There is no hard sell and no expectation that you must say yes because we have taken the time to look at the job. We will answer your questions, explain the quotation and let you decide what happens next.

We will not make you feel uncomfortable for asking.

A quotation can still be useful later

Even if the work does not go ahead immediately, a quotation can give you a useful reference point.

It can help you plan your budget, discuss the project with a client, price a wider contract or decide whether a particular design is practical. If the work comes back onto the agenda months or even years later, you can contact us again and we can review the details.

Prices, material costs, availability and programmes may need to be checked again, but the original conversation can still provide a helpful starting point.

Many customers return to us later with a new project or an updated version of an earlier one. That is exactly why we do not mind providing a quotation that does not immediately turn into an order. Building a good relationship is more important than pushing for a quick decision.

We would rather you ask than struggle with the wrong solution

People sometimes try to solve a steelwork problem themselves because they feel embarrassed about asking for help.

They may not know whether a support is strong enough, whether a bracket can be made to fit, whether a handrail will work in the available space or whether a sheet metal detail can be formed as required.

There is no need to feel awkward.

Asking for advice early can help you avoid ordering the wrong materials, making inaccurate measurements or continuing with something that may not be suitable or safe. We can discuss the options and tell you honestly if a job is outside our capabilities or needs input from another professional.

Our role is not simply to make whatever is requested without question. Good steel fabricators also help identify practical issues before they become expensive problems.

No job is too small

At RW Steel Fabrications LTD, smaller jobs are welcome too.

You may need a single bracket, a replacement flashing, an aluminium sill cover, a small gate, a handrail or a one-off custom metal fabrication. A small component can still be important if it is holding up a project, allowing another trade to finish or solving a problem that has been difficult to deal with.

We work from our 10,000 sq ft workshop in Sheffield, supporting customers across the UK. Our work includes structural steel, welding, sheet metal work, gates, fencing, handrails, bar fitting, shop fit-out work and subcontract fabrication for other businesses.

For bar fitters, shop fitters, architects and interior designers, we can produce made-to-measure steelwork such as bar fronts, counters, frames, shelving, screens and decorative metalwork. You can find out more about our bar fitting and subcontract fabrication service.

For construction companies and main contractors, we can discuss structural steelwork and welded assemblies. For other fabricators, we can provide additional capacity when your own workshop is busy.

A friendly first step

You do not need a perfectly prepared enquiry before you contact us.

Send us a drawing, dimensions, photograph or rough outline. Tell us what you are trying to achieve, where the job is located and what stage the project has reached. If a survey would help, we can arrange the next step.

You are not wasting our time by asking. You are giving us the opportunity to understand the job properly and tell you whether we can help.

If the project goes ahead, we will be pleased to work with you. If it does not, that is fine too. You can come back when the time is right.
